HOW TO 'WIND' YOUR AUTOMATIC WATCH
-
1 - Push the crown in completely
Make sure the crown is fully pushed in so that it is connected to the winding mechanism. When the crown is pulled out, the watch is in time setting mode.
-
2 - Turn the crown clockwise
Turn the crown clockwise (away from you) for approximately 20-30 full rotations. This winds the spring enough to be fully charged.
-
3 - Repeat if the watch is not worn for 15 hours
A fully charged watch should last approximately 10-15 hours without movement. If it is not worn during this period, repeat the winding process.
AUTOMATIC WATCHES
In order for an automatic self-winding watch to function properly, the spring must build up sufficient tension. It is important to note that the watch must be manually wound before it can run automatically, a process known as 'winding'. Without this process the timepiece will not function correctly or consistently.
To activate the watch, turn the winding crown and make approximately 20 clockwise revolutions. This first 'winding' is usually sufficient for most automatic watches. During winding, the small spring in the watch is manually tightened, creating enough tension to start the movement. As the spring relaxes, it pulls the gears, which in turn, through advanced technology, set the hands in motion. Once the spring is fully relaxed, the watch stops running.
Once the process is complete, the watch automatically winds itself using an oscillating weight that moves with each wrist movement. To maximize tension, a self-winding watch should be worn at least eight hours a day. If this is not possible, or if the watch is not worn for more than 15 hours, it is necessary to repeat the process.
QUARTZ / BATTERY WATCHES
Unlike mechanical watches, a watch with a quartz movement does not require any winding or initial operation.
Because it's powered by a battery that sends an electrical signal through a small quartz crystal, it requires relatively little maintenance and should keep accurate time no matter how often it's worn.
SETTING THE TIME
Pull the crown out until you hear a clear click. Turn the crown counterclockwise until you have set the desired time. After the setting is completed, push the crown back to its original position.
